St. Paulinus Early Years Foundation Stage

The Early Years Unit at St. Paulinus is made up of 2 mixed classes of Nursery and Reception children. We have a great team of adults who work very hard to ensure that children get the very best start to their education – academically, personally and socially.

The Early Years are an extremely important part of your child’s journey into education. Through purposeful play, adult input and objective led planning, your child will learn key skills that will enable them to become independent learners and develop a love of learning.

In Nursery and Reception, our curriculum is designed to:

  • Recognise children’s prior learning from previous settings and their experiences at home:
  • Provide first-hand learning experiences
  • Ensure quality interactions with adults
  • Provide a language rich environment
  • Inspire a lifelong love of learning

Across our EYFS we refer to the Development Matters (2021) document to implement the statutory requirements as stated in the Early Years Statutory Framework (2021). This framework specifies the requirements for learning and development in the EYFS.

Your child will learn new skills, acquire knowledge and demonstrate their understanding through the 7 areas of learning and development which form the EYFS curriculum.

Children should mostly develop in the 3 Prime areas first:

  • Communication and Language
  • Physical Development
  • Personal, Social, and Emotional Development

These prime areas are the most essential for your child’s healthy development and future learning. As children grow, the Prime areas will help them to develop skills in 4 Specific areas:

  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding the World
  • Expressive Arts and Design.

There are 3 Characteristics of effective learning that we follow, which are:

  • playing and exploring – children investigate and experience things and ‘have a go.’
  • active learning – children concentrate and keep on trying if they encounter difficulties and enjoy achievements
  • creating and thinking critically – children have and develop their own ideas, make links between ideas, and develop strategies for doing things.

Our large Early Years space allows the two classes to be taught separately and together, but with a close, caring relationship between children and staff. We have a wonderful, large outdoor area which is shared by both classes.

The Early Years department is led by Miss Regan who teaches the EYR and is the team leader for the EYFS department.

The full team consists of:

Miss Regan Early Years Leadteacher
Mrs Clayton – EYJC Part-time teacher
Mrs Jackson – EYJC Part-time teacher
Miss Harrison – Nursery Nurse
Mrs Oakley – HLTA
Mrs Benn – HLTA
Mrs Kelly – ETA

Using our senses in EYU

What a great morning we have had I EYU using all our senses! We used touch, smell, see, hearing and even tasting.! We experimented with the shaving foam, in the gelli slime, smelling herbs and playing in the lemon and lime water! Some children even tasted the lemon and limes!
