Class 1R curriculum
Our topic this term is Astronauts!!!
This topic will give the children the opportunity to be space explorers and find out lots of interesting facts about the universe. They will learn about the first moon landing and create a fact file about Neil Armstrong. They will also compare the moon with our school environment
R.E. – As theologians we will :
- Be able to talk about our families and celebrations.
- Begin to retell the religious Bible stories through art work, drama and writing.
- Recognise religious celebrations such as Baptism and the signs and symbols that go with this special event.
- Recognise some signs and symbols of Lent and Easter and use some religious words.
- Recognise some ways in which we can look after God’s family.
- Recognise some ways in which we as Christians prepare for Easter.
- Be able to talk about Jesus’ death.
- Be able to talk about Holy Week and Easter and how it makes us feel.
Literacy – As writers and communicators we will :
- Include full stops, capital letters, finger spaces and conjunctions within our writing.
- Use phonics to help with spellings.
- Read stories about different experiences.
- Writing postcards.
- Writing letters.
- To be able to ask and punctuate questions accurately.
- Use cursive writing.
- Use drama to explore stories in greater depth.
PSHE – we will :
- Discuss what makes us healthy
- How to play nicely with others
- How to act when people need help
- Be aware of people that can help us
- Try out best to be kind and caring to others
Geography – As geographers we will :
- Developing basic geographical language to refer to key physical and human features.
- Keep a weather chart – looking at rainfall and temperature.
- Compare our school environment with the moon.
Design Technology – As designers we will :
- Be able to evaluate our/peers work stating what we like and dislike.
- Use a variety of equipment.
- Use a range of materials.
- Design a space rocket.
Mathematics – As mathematicians we will :
- Time: Tell the time to the hour and half-past the hour; solve practical problems for time.
- Exploring calculation strategies within 20: Represent and use number bonds; use concrete and pictorial representation to solve one-step problems.
- Numbers to 50: Count, read, write, identify, represent in numerals and words; recognise place value.
- Addition and subtraction within 20: Comparison and difference. Represent and use number bonds; read, write, interpret and solve one-step problems.
- Fractions: Recognise, find and name a half and a quarter as one of two or four equal parts respectively.
- Measures: Length and mass.
- Compare, describe, measure, record and solve practical problems.
Science – As scientists we will :
- Identify different climates.
- Identify, sort and group materials.
- Know that materials have different properties – transparent, waterproof, etc.
- Use our investigative skills to test which materials are most suitable for different purposes. Cold and warm, thermal?
PE – As athletes we will :
- Be able to follow instructions.
- Be aware of health and safety.
- Understand why we need to warm up and cool down.
- Safely use a variety of apparatus.
Computing – We will :
- Use sound recording equipment.
- Develop our skills in saving and storing sounds.
- Develop collaboration skills as we work as a group.
- Understand how a talking book differs from a paper-based book.
- Talk about our use of ICT.
- Share our recordings with an audience.
- Recognise common uses of information the technology beyond school.
- Use technology safely and respectfully.
Art – As artists we will :
- Use a range of drawing techniques to complete drawings of space.
- Use our pencil/drawing techniques to copy/design postcards.
- Mix paints to make a sea painting.
- Look at the works of Kandinsky.
Homework – this will be given out on a Friday and MUST be completed and returned to school by the following Wednesday.
Children will have two independent reading books which will be brought home once a week and MUST be returned to school on their reading day. Reading records will be given to the children for parents to fill out as and when their child reads during the week at home. There will be three pieces of homework; English, Phonics and Maths sent home. Thank you for your support with this.
Year one will have no school trips in the Spring term. Further details will be sent out closer to the time.
- A P.E. kit consists of: a white t-shirt, blue (or black) shorts, and a pair of pumps (indoor use) / sports trainers for outdoor use, which they should leave in school. As an optional extra, a dark coloured pair of jogging trousers and a jumper can also be worn when we are outside / during the winter months.
- If your child has pierced ears, it would be much appreciated if you could remove their earrings on each morning of P.E. Please note that staff are not able to remove them or cover them, so this will result in your child not taking part in our P.E. lesson and an alternative task will be provided for the child, this is due to health and safety reasons. Long hair must be tied back.
- Please ensure your child has a P.E. kit in school at all times. All P.E. kit must be labeled clearly with your child’s name. If it becomes lost, it can easily be returned to the rightful owner. If your child does not have their P.E. kit in school you may receive a text message to inform you that they need it for the following week.
