Class 4NS curriculum
Our theme this term is:
Romans & Rainforests
As theologians we will :
- Learn about the Christian Family .
- Think about what it means to be part of a Christian family.
- Start our Holy Communion journey.
- Learn about The Mass.
- Make links between actions of beliefs.
As writers and communicators we will :
- Write instructions linking to volcano evacuation.
- Write non-chronological reports (fact file).
- Create newspaper reports using direct and reported speech.
- Write shape poems that convey an image/sound.
- Learn how to construct a range of sentence types.
- Read and listen to a wide range of styles of text.
- Read and listen to whole books (Romans on the Rampage and Escape from Pompeii).
- Engage in meaningful discussions in all areas of the curriculum.
- Listen to and learn a wide range of subject specific vocabulary.
As readers we will :
- Read and listen to a variety of texts.
We will be looking at friendships and getting on with each other.
- We will focus on ourselves and why it is good to be me.
- We will be doing this through drama, reflective time in class, whole class discussions and art work.
As geographers we will :
- Use maps, atlases and ICT to locate rainforests on the world map and explore the key geographical features.
- We will develop our vocabulary relating to rainforests and understand their features.
- We will use a range of sources to help us to understand settlements and land use, economic activity and use of natural resources.
- We will explore the effect humans have on the environment.
As designers we will :
- Compare and evaluate existing story books
- Design and create a storybook
Evaluate our design
As historians we will :
- Research Boudica .
- Investigate famous Romans.
- Draw comparisons between Roman and modern life.
Children will learn about :
- The Roman Empire and its impact on Britain.
They will be able to :
- Investigate and interpret the past.
- Understand chronology.
- Communicate historically.
- Build an overview of world history.
As mathematicians we will :
- Work on securing our multiplication facts.
- Look at equivalent fractions, convert between mixed and improper fractions and learn to add and subtract fractions.
- Tell the time using both analogue and digital clocks.
- Convert units of time (seconds, minutes and hours).
- Recognise, compare and order decimals
- Add, subtract, multiply, divide and round decimals.
- Measure and calculate the perimeter of regular and composite shapes in mm, cm and m
- Calculate the perimeter of squares, rectangles and triangles.
As scientists we will :
- Be working scientifically to study and investigate states of matter
- Identify and classify solids, liquids and gasses
- Perform investigations into melting and freezing
- Draw conclusions
- Look at particles and how they behave
- Investigate living things
- We will look at rainforest plants and explore their requirement for growth.
- We will recognise that living things can be grouped in a variety of ways.
- We will recognise that environments change and this can pose dangers to living things.
- We will set up enquiries and plan fair tests by identifying, observing and recording variables.
As athletes we will
- Complete a unit of work using ‘Dance Mats’
- Develop and perform routines
- Explore themes surrounding balance, timing and rhythm.
We will be learning how to use spreadsheets and data. Children will learn about:
- Cell locations using co-ordinates.
- Different formulas for calculations.
- Different types of data.
- Line graphs to represent data.
As artists we will be focusing on the work of Spanish artist Antoni Gaudi
Children will :
- Use experiences, other subjects across the curriculum and ideas as inspiration for artwork.
- Use a range of techniques and mediums including pastels, charcoal and 3D materials.
As musicians we will :
- Listen to and learn about Rap music.
- Listen to and Learn about Soul and Gospel music.
- Become familiar with vocabulary: Lyrics, Choreography, Synthesisers, Improvise, Riff, Musical Style, Notation, Backing, Soul, Gospel, Vocal, Texture, Structure.
Homework – This will be handed out on a Monday and MUST be completed and returned to school by the Friday.
Reading – Children will have an independent reading book which will be brought home on a daily basis and MUST be returned to school every day. Children can be reading their own independent book from home or class reading area once they have finished the given book and completed a book review. Children’s independent reading books are changed once a week in school. Reading records are to be completed each time you listen to your child read at home.
As we are unable to have a Welcome Evening this year, if you have any questions or concerns please contact your child’s class teacher via email: email@example.com or by contacting the school office and arranging a telephone appointment.
Physical Education (P.E.) – is on Monday and Friday, so children must ensure their P.E. kits are worn to School on these days.
The St Paulinus P.E. kit consists of: a white t-shirt with the school logo, blue (or black) shorts, and a pair of pumps. As an optional extra, a dark coloured pair of jogging trousers and a school PE hoodie or jumper can also be worn when we are outside / during the winter months. Children must come to school in their PE kits on their PE days and will stay in their PE kits throughout the day.
In addition, the only jewellery permitted in school is a pair of plain small stud earrings. If your child has pierced ears, then they need to remove their earrings on each morning of P.E.
Please note that staff are not able to remove earrings, so this will result in your child not taking part in our P.E. lesson and an alternative task will be provided for the child, this is due to health and safety reasons.
Long hair must be tied back.
Please ensure your child wears their PE kit on their PE days. If your child does not come to school in their P.E. kit, you may receive a text message to inform you that they need it for the following week. All P.E. kit and School uniform must be labelled clearly with your child’s name. If it becomes lost, it can then be easily returned to the rightful owner.
Swimming – normally takes place on Friday mornings but due to the current situation children will not be going swimming this half term. We will send a letter to parents as soon as we are informed that lessons will recommence.
