Class 4NS curriculum
Our theme this term is:
As theologians we will :
- Look at the mission of the Church and what Jesus wanted his disciples to complete.
- We will our place in the Church and look at what we have to do to become part of the Church community.
As writers and communicators we will :
- Be writing diary entries based around the novel ‘The
Firework Maker’s Daughter’
- Emphasise with the characters from the book
- Write character descriptions of the different characters we are introduced to throughout the story
- Write a setting description of China
As caring citizens we will:
- Understand our rights and responsibilities in school, at home and in the wider world
- Know the threats that the environment faces and what we can do to help
As geographers we will :
- Use simple coordinates when working with maps of the UK
- Use eight points of a compass and a key to build up knowledge about the UK
- Develop our understanding of maps, symbols and keys (UK and area maps) and create a map
- Know how to use graphs to record features such as temperatures or rainfall across the world
Compare an area of Europe, the UK and an area in North America
As designers we will :
- Design and evaluate existing light models
- Create criteria for our own light model
- Use circuit knowledge to create our light model
As historians we will :
- Study the Shang Dynasty of Ancient China.
- Find out about the Shang Dynasty of China and explore how we know about it / Explore the evidence surrounding the Shang kings
- To find out about Shang royal burials
- To find out what ordinary life was like for people during the Shang Dynasty
- To find out about the writing and calendar created during the Shang Dynasty
- To find out why the Shang Dynasty ended.
As mathematicians we will :
- Be using different methods for addition, subtraction,
division and multiplication
- We will also be revising our basic skills and place value
- Problem solving will be on-going throughout the term
- Interpret fractions and covert between mixed numbers and improper fractions
- Add and subtract fractions with the same denominator
- Solve problems involving money
- Develop an understanding of shape and symmetry
- Compare and order angles in 2D shapes
- Read, write and plot coordinates
- Solve problems involving patterns and sequences
As scientists we will :
- Investigate living things
- Recognise how living things are adapted for their environments
- Recognise that environments change and this can pose dangers to living things
- Investigate electricity
- Understand conductors and insulators and know some examples of these
- Set up enquiries and plan fair tests by identifying, observing and recording
As athletes, we will develop skills in :
- Net and Ball games, Swim safety and athletics.
we will :
- Use and build procedures in logo
- Create an animation and discuss different types of animation
- Use search engines and assess whether information sources are reliable
- Understand the different parts that make up a computer
Electronically compose a piece of music
As artists we will :
- Experiment with the application of colours and paints
- Make practical responses to the work of Georgia O’Keefe
- Adapt and develop sketchbook work
- Make practical responses to techniques used by J.M.W Turner
Homework – This will be handed out on a Monday and MUST be completed and returned to school by the Friday.
Reading – Children will have an independent reading book which will be brought home on a daily basis and MUST be returned to school every day. Children can be reading their own independent book from home or class reading area once they have finished the given book and completed a book review. Children’s independent reading books are changed once a week in school. Reading records are to be completed each time you listen to your child read at home.
As we are unable to have a Welcome Evening this year, if you have any questions or concerns please contact your child’s class teacher via email: firstname.lastname@example.org or by contacting the school office and arranging a telephone appointment.
Physical Education (P.E.) – is on Monday and Friday, so children must ensure their P.E. kits are worn to School on these days.
The St Paulinus P.E. kit consists of: a white t-shirt with the school logo, blue (or black) shorts, and a pair of pumps. As an optional extra, a dark coloured pair of jogging trousers and a school PE hoodie or jumper can also be worn when we are outside / during the winter months. Children must come to school in their PE kits on their PE days and will stay in their PE kits throughout the day.
In addition, the only jewellery permitted in school is a pair of plain small stud earrings. If your child has pierced ears, then they need to remove their earrings on each morning of P.E.
Please note that staff are not able to remove earrings, so this will result in your child not taking part in our P.E. lesson and an alternative task will be provided for the child, this is due to health and safety reasons.
Long hair must be tied back.
Please ensure your child wears their PE kit on their PE days. If your child does not come to school in their P.E. kit, you may receive a text message to inform you that they need it for the following week. All P.E. kit and School uniform must be labelled clearly with your child’s name. If it becomes lost, it can then be easily returned to the rightful owner.
Swimming – normally takes place on Friday mornings but due to the current situation children will not be going swimming this half term. We will send a letter to parents as soon as we are informed that lessons will recommence.
