Class 5S curriculum
As theologians we will :
- Know the story of creation and the Fall in Genesis and think about its meaning
- Know why God made us
- Know that God calls us for care of creation
- Know about individuals who inspire us to respect creation
- Know and appreciate the purpose of the Ten Commandments
- Understand that the Commandments are a gift from God to help us
- Reflect on the birth of Jesus
As writers and communicators we will :
- Understand and compare character’s personalities and intentions.
- Write a character description.
- Describe a setting.
- Write a diary entry from Karl’s perspective.
- Use drama to demonstrate our understanding of the text.
As we are continuing to develop we will:
- Look at crime, how to recognise it and what to do if we see it happening.
- Discuss identities and what makes our identity.
- Identify, describe and locate some of the world’s highest mountains.
- Know what a mountain is and how it is formed
- Explore some famous people who have climbed mountains.
- Learn about endangered animal and plant species that live on a mountain.
- Compare mountain ranges across the world.
As designers we will :
- Develop our knowledge in nutrition and cooking skills.
- Enhance our knowledge in how baking has changed and enhanced over the years as well as building on our recipe skills.
As historians we will study the struggle of the Anglo-Saxons for the Kingdom of England:
- Who were the Anglo-Saxons and how did they influence our lives today?
- What evidence do we have today that the Anglo-Saxons were here in the first place?
- Which Anglo-Saxon Christian symbols remain with us today?
- How did the Anglo-Saxons bring law and order to Britain?
- Who were the famous Anglo-Saxons and why was Alfred ‘so great’?
As mathematicians we will:
- Use methods for addition, subtraction, division and multiplication.
- Learn to understand and use equivalences between metric units and common imperial units such as
inches, pounds and pints
- Use all four operations to solve problems involving measure (e.g. length, mass, volume, money)
- Measure and calculate the perimeter of composite rectilinear shapes in centimetres and metres
- Measure, draw, estimate and compare different angles
- Compare and order fractions
- Identify, name and write equivalent fractions
- Read and write decimal numbers as fractions
- Recognise, write and compare numbers with up to three decimal places
- Develop our problem solving skills
As scientists we will study animals including humans. This will include :
- The human timeline
- Describe what happens during pregnancy and different gestation periods
- Describing problems people face when they get old
- Discuss the external and internal changes which happen to boys and girls in puberty.
As athletes we will :
- Develop our balance, coordination, agility and stamina as gymnasts
- Develop our catching, throwing, defending and attacking through tag rugby
We will :
- Debug, improve and create games using coding
- Understand the importance of online safety and how to remain safe online
As artists we will study:
- Use paint to respond to the work of Chris Ofili.
- Compare ideas, methods and approaches in Fauvism.
- Produce a reduction print block using Print Press.
This term our music is focused around ‘Livin’ on a Prayer’ by Bon Jovi.
- We will be discussing the song and its instruments, learning to sing the song, playing instruments and performing this piece of music.
This will be handed out on a Friday and MUST be completed and returned to school by the following Wednesday. Spelling tests will be completed on Friday.
Reading – Children will have an independent reading book which will be brought home. It must be returned to school once read. Children can be reading their own independent book from home or school library/class reading area once they have finished the given book and completed a book review.
Children’s independent reading books are changed as and when required in school. It is your child’s responsibility to make sure a member of staff in class is aware that the book needs changing. Reading records are to be completed each time you listen to your child read at home. Equally, your child can complete the record by mentioning the pages read and whether they have enjoyed it or not.
As we are unable to have a Welcome Evening this year, if you have any questions or concerns please contact your child’s class teacher via email: email@example.com or by contacting the school office and arranging a telephone appointment.
Physical Education (P.E.) – is on Tuesdays and Thursdays, so children must ensure they wear their P.E. kits to School on these days.
The St Paulinus P.E. kit consists of: a white t-shirt with the school logo, blue (or black) shorts, and a pair of pumps. As an optional extra, a dark coloured pair of jogging trousers and a school PE hoodie or jumper can also be worn when we are outside / during the winter months. Children must come to school in their PE kits on their PE days and will stay in their PE kits throughout the day.
In addition, the only jewellery permitted in school is a pair of plain small stud earrings. If your child has pierced ears, then they need to remove their earrings on each morning of P.E.
Please note that staff are not able to remove earrings, so this will result in your child not taking part in our P.E. lessons and an alternative task will be provided for the child, this is due to health and safety reasons.
Long hair must be tied back.
Please ensure your child wears their PE kit on their PE days. If your child does not come to school in their P.E. kit, you may receive a text message to inform you that they need it for the following week. All P.E. kit and School uniform must be labelled clearly with your child’s name. If it becomes lost, it can then be easily returned to the rightful owner.
